US State Flags
Bold stripes, lone stars, grizzly bears and a sea of seals on blue: every state flies a banner of its own. Any names stitched into them have been painted out, so it's just you and the designs. How many of the fifty can you place?
About this quiz
Every US state has its own flag, and they range from simple, bold designs to detailed seals on plain backgrounds. Flag fans have a joking name for that second style, seals on a bedsheet, because so many states use the same formula of a crest on a blue field. That makes this quiz a real test, since the obvious shortcut of reading the state's name has been taken away. Wherever a flag spells out its state, the lettering has been painted over, which affects 23 of the 50.
Each flag has its own answer box underneath. Type the state you think it belongs to, and the box locks in green as soon as it is right, then moves you to the next empty one. Pressing Enter on a box you can't answer skips ahead too. The order is shuffled, so neighbours and look-alikes are not grouped together. Look closely at symbols such as animals, plants, stars and mottos, and think about the state's history and landscape.
You have ten minutes for all fifty. The flags shown are the current designs as of 2026, including several states that adopted new flags in the 2020s, so an old memory might lead you astray. The images come from Wikimedia Commons, where nearly all of them are in the public domain.
