Best-Selling Video Games of All Time
Hundreds of millions of copies, from cartridges blown clean in the 1980s to downloads that are still climbing today. Blockbuster open worlds, family party hits and tiny indie surprises all made the cut. How many of the biggest-selling games ever can you name?
About this quiz
Some games become part of everyday culture. They are bundled with consoles, passed around at parties, played on phones and computers, and released again on every new generation of hardware, until their sales climb into the tens or even hundreds of millions. This quiz asks you to name the 25 best-selling individual video games of all time, from the 1980s to the 2020s.
The list is a real mix. There are sprawling open-world adventures, competitive shooters, family-friendly party and sports titles, platform-game mascots, life simulators and a few small independent games that became word-of-mouth phenomena. Some sold huge numbers because they came packed in with a console, while others kept selling for more than a decade through updates, re-releases and ports. Think about what you have seen on many different systems, not just one, and remember that some of these games are much older than you might expect.
Type each game into the answer box, in any order, and it drops into its slot as soon as it is recognised. Short names, abbreviations and numerals are accepted, so there is no need to type the full official title. Each slot shows the year the game first came out, and its approximate sales appear once you find it. You have six minutes. Sales follow Wikipedia's list of best-selling video games, which counts remasters and re-releases with the original and is based on publisher announcements; the cutoff is roughly 38 million copies.
