How Many Calories?
Some foods are far lighter than they look, and some innocent-looking servings pack a serious punch. A dozen everyday foods and drinks put your nutrition instincts to the test. Think you can tell a light bite from a calorie bomb?
About this quiz
A calorie (strictly a kilocalorie, or kcal) measures how much energy a food gives your body. Fat carries about 9 kcal per gram, alcohol about 7, and carbohydrates and protein about 4 each, while water and most fiber carry almost none. That is why watery foods can be eaten by the bowlful for very little energy, and why small portions of oily or dried foods can add up fast.
This quiz gives you twelve foods and drinks, each with a clearly stated serving, and asks you to estimate how many calories it contains on a scale from 0 to 1,000 kcal. The closer you land, the more points you score, up to five per question, so a near miss still earns something.
All values come from the USDA FoodData Central database (SR Legacy). Real foods vary with variety, brand and recipe, so treat each figure as a typical reference value. You have five minutes.
