Greek Mythology

Squabbling gods, fearsome monsters and heroes who dared the impossible: the myths of ancient Greece are some of the greatest stories ever told. How well do you really know them?

About this quiz

The myths of ancient Greece were told and retold for well over a thousand years, by poets like Homer and Hesiod, by playwrights in Athens and by later writers who gathered the stories into handbooks. They tell how the world began and how the gods came to power, and they follow a huge cast of gods, Titans, monsters and mortal heroes whose adventures still shape books, films and everyday language today.

This quiz has sixteen questions, each with four options and one right answer. It opens with the rulers of Olympus that almost everyone has heard of, moves on to the great heroes and the creatures they faced, and finishes with family trees and episodes that reward anyone who has read the old stories closely. The wrong options are real figures from the same myths, so a name that sounds familiar isn't always the right one.

You have five minutes, which leaves almost twenty seconds per question. The myths come in many versions, and where ancient writers disagree the quiz follows the best-known telling, the one found in most modern retellings.
