Literary Characters & Their Books

Twelve of the most famous characters in classic literature, each waiting to be reunited with the novel that made them a legend. How well do you really know your bookshelf?

About this quiz

Great characters often outlive the memory of the books they came from. People quote them, name pets after them and argue about them long after the last page, but the title of the novel can slip away. This quiz gathers twelve of the best-known figures in classic fiction, from early nineteenth-century England to mid-twentieth-century America, and asks you to put each one back in the book where they belong.

These are household names from school reading lists, bedtime stories and countless film adaptations, so most players will recognise every character straight away. None of them gives their name to their book's title, so you'll need to remember the story, not just the cover. Each character appears in only one of the twelve books, so there is exactly one correct match for every name.

Connect each character on the left to the book on the right you think they belong to. You have two minutes. Once you check your answers, a short note shows each book's author and the year it was first published, taken from standard bibliographies such as Britannica.
