Name That Military Aircraft

Fighters, bombers, spy planes and helicopters, from the Second World War to today. How many of the world's most famous military aircraft can you name from a single photo?

About this quiz

Military aircraft tend to have memorable shapes, because their designs follow very specific jobs. Stealth aircraft are all flat angles, attack planes are built around their guns, transport helicopters carry their rotors where they need lift, and the fighters of the Second World War are instantly recognisable by their propellers and cockpits. This quiz shows seventeen famous aircraft, one photo each, and asks you to name them.

The selection spans from the 1940s to today and includes fighters, bombers, a spy plane, helicopters and a tilt-rotor that takes off like a helicopter and flies like a plane. Most photos were taken by US Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Army photographers, along with wartime Royal Air Force images and a few CC0 contributions, all sourced from Wikimedia Commons. File names are hashed so they never hint at the answer.

Each photo has its own answer box. You do not need the full official designation: model numbers, nicknames and full names are all accepted, so a well-known nickname on its own is enough. You have six minutes, a little over twenty seconds per aircraft. Look at the number of engines, the shape of the wings and tail, and whether there is a propeller or rotor, then let your memory of air shows, documentaries and old model kits do the rest.
