About this quiz
A spin-off takes something an audience already loves, a scene-stealing neighbor, a fan-favorite villain or a corner of a fictional world, and gives it a show of its own. Some spin-offs grew bigger than the series that launched them, winning more awards or running for more seasons, while others quietly faded after a year. Many began with a backdoor pilot: an episode of the original show built to introduce new characters before the new series was ordered.
This quiz lists fifteen spin-offs and fifteen parent shows, spanning half a century of television. There are 1970s sitcoms, 1990s teen soaps and cult fantasy, animated comedies, prestige dramas and long-running procedurals. Each spin-off comes from exactly one of the shows on the list, so every pairing has a single right answer, and the spin-offs that simply repeat their parent's name were left out to keep things fair.
