About this quiz
Some battles are remembered for centuries. They toppled kings, ended empires, turned the tide of world wars and gave us phrases we still use today. The twelve in this quiz are among the most famous clashes ever fought, from the ancient world to the 20th century.
Knowing who fought helps, but the battlefield is often far from where you would expect, and some of the fighting took place hundreds or thousands of kilometres from either side's home. Many of these places are now memorials, museums and cemeteries that draw visitors from all over the world. Once each answer is shown you also learn when the battle was fought and why it mattered.
To play, drop a pin where you think each battlefield is. The closer your pin lands, the more points you score, up to 100 a battlefield, so a near miss still counts. You have six minutes for all twelve. Zoom in when you are confident, and aim for the right country or coast when you are not.
