Pin the Strait
Twelve narrow stretches of water where continents almost touch, empires clashed and the world's ships squeeze through. You know the names from the news and the history books, but could you find them on a map with no labels?
About this quiz
A strait is a narrow channel of sea between two pieces of land, and a handful of them shape the whole world. Oil tankers, container ships and navies all funnel through these gaps, so a blockage in one of them can move prices on the other side of the planet. Explorers searched for them for centuries, armies fought over them, and swimmers still race across some of them for fun.
The twelve straits in this quiz are spread across every inhabited continent, from the edge of the Arctic to the far south of the Americas. Some separate two countries, some split a single country in two, and a few divide whole continents. Knowing which seas a strait connects is the best clue, because the target is always the water between the two shores. Once each answer is shown you also learn a little about why that strait matters.
To play, drop a pin where you think each strait is. The closer your pin lands, the more points you score, up to 100 a strait, so a near miss still counts. You have six minutes for all twelve. Zoom in on the coastline when you are confident, and aim for the gap between the two shores when you are not.
