Famous Bridges
Some are centuries old, some broke engineering records, and many are as famous as the cities they connect. How many of the world's most iconic bridges can you recognize from a single photo?
About this quiz
Bridges are some of the most impressive structures humans build. Some have stood for many centuries, others set records for span length when they opened, and quite a few have become symbols of the cities they serve. Engineers use several main designs, such as stone arches, steel cantilevers, suspension bridges hung from cables and modern cable-stayed spans, and each gives a bridge a very different silhouette.
This quiz shows sixteen photos of famous bridges from around the world, each with four possible names to choose from. Pick one option for each photo. The wrong answers aren't random: they are other real bridges that look similar or stand in the same city or region, so you need to look closely at the details rather than relying on a general impression. The photos come from Wikimedia Commons and are all public domain or CC0, with credits listed in the results.
You have four minutes, which works out to about fifteen seconds per bridge. Look at the shape of the towers, the color of the steel or stone, whether the deck is carried by arches, trusses or cables, and what's around it, such as buildings, water or hills. Details like shops built on the deck or the number of arches can be the clue that separates two bridges from the same city.
